Best dog paw balm for winter

Short answer: For winter walks, Musher's Secret paw wax is the balm owners report on most, and the only one with a real salt record, though that record is split: 3 of 33 owners said it protected their dog's paws on salted sidewalks, 3 of 33 said it worked only partly (on lighter salt, on bigger dogs, or for part of the walk), and one said it offered little protection from salt. On heavily salted streets or in deep cold, dog boots do the job a balm can't. For dry or cracked pads, Natural Dog Company Paw Soother is the healing balm with the best owner record: 4 of 9 said it helped.

How we chose

We didn't test these balms ourselves. We read Reddit threads, two dog forums and independent reviews where owners describe paw balm on their own dog, and counted 70 first-hand reports: 62 on branded balms and the rest on Vaseline, coconut oil and homemade balm. We counted what owners said happened: did it heal dry or cracked pads, did it hold up on salt, did it stay on, did the dog lick it off or refuse it? Advice, plans and what someone had heard didn't count, and several comments from the same person on one product count once. Amazon review text and brand pages didn't count at all. Read how we review for the full method.

A balm is a full pick if at least five different owners described it. A balm with three or four reports is marked Few reports and is never the top pick; anything with fewer is in Also considered. Picks are listed by how much owner evidence is behind them.

Top pick

Musher's Secret paw wax

Verdict: Musher's Secret paw wax is the balm owners talk about most, by a wide margin, and the only one with several salt reports, but they're split: 3 of 33 owners said it protected their dog's paws on salted sidewalks, 3 of 33 said it worked only partly, and another said it gave little protection from salt. Treat it as protection for lighter salt and ordinary cold, not a replacement for boots.

Good for
A wax barrier before walks on lightly salted sidewalks; dogs that won't wear boots; keeping snow from balling between the toes
Not for
Heavily salted streets or deep cold (owners switch to boots); warmth (owners say it doesn't help with cold); dogs that lick everything off
What owners reported (33 first-hand reports)
  • Works well overall9 of 33
  • Protected paws on salt3 of 33
  • Helped dry or cracked pads4 of 33
  • Kept snow from balling up2 of 33
  • Protected paws in winter cold2 of 33
  • Dog dislikes it or its smell3 of 33
  • Wore off or was licked off3 of 33
  • Worked only partly on salt3 of 33
  • Did nothing for warmth2 of 33

Counted from Reddit, dog forum and independent review owner reports; most are from Reddit. Sources

What owners like

  • The only balm with several salt reports, though they're split
  • Keeps snow and ice from packing between the toes
  • Doubles as a pad conditioner for dry or cracked pads

Watch out for

  • Not a boot: owners say it gives out on heavy salt, on small dogs and partway through a walk
  • It wears off on the walk or gets licked off
  • Some dogs dislike it or its smell; one owner noticed a little slipping on hard floors

Musher's Secret is a wax, so it sits on the pad as a thin barrier rather than soaking in; one owner found it isn't very moisturizing. Put it on just before you head out, and rinse or wipe paws when you get home. The Amazon.ca listing we link sells the common retail size, not the large tub. One greyhound owner also uses it on hot pavement.

A Canadian owner who has used it for seven winters describes where it stops working: “It does everything it says on the label. My girl has a cut off point of -17 Celsius before we are allowed to put boots on her.”

Best for cracked pads

Natural Dog Company Paw Soother

Verdict: Natural Dog Company Paw Soother is a healing balm, not a salt barrier, and it has the best owner record for dry or cracked pads: 4 of 9 owners said it helped. Several also said it put their dog off licking. Nobody in our sample reported using it on salted winter walks, so don't count on it for that.

Good for
Dry, rough or cracked pads; applying at home, between walks; dogs that lick off other balms
Not for
Protection on salted sidewalks (no owner tested it there); homes where a greasy floor is a problem
What owners reported (9 first-hand reports)
  • Helped dry or cracked pads4 of 9
  • Didn't encourage licking3 of 9
  • Works well overall2 of 9

Counted from Reddit owner reports. Single owners mentioned slippery floors, a dog that disliked it, and the price. Sources

What owners like

  • Helped dry and cracked pads: 4 of 9 owners said so
  • Several owners said it put their dog off licking its paws
  • An easy stick to apply

Watch out for

  • No winter salt reports: one owner said they hadn't tried it in winter yet
  • One owner found it made floors slippery
  • One owner called it pricey

One owner on Reddit sums it up: “You have to use it for a little bit before there's noticeable results but if you're consistent with it, it definitely helps with dryness/cracking and stopped my dog from licking.”

Where to buy: Natural Dog Company Paw Soother isn't sold on Amazon.ca, so there's no button here. The maker sells it on its own site.

Bag Balm

Verdict: Bag Balm is an ointment that owners use to heal cracked pads, not a salt barrier: 4 of 7 owners said it works, and 2 of 7 said it helped cracked pads. Nobody in our sample used it on salted walks. Use it at home between walks, not as winter protection.

Good for
Cracked or rough pads that need healing at home
Not for
Protection on salted sidewalks; very thick, crusty pads (one owner said it wasn't moisturizing enough)
What owners reported (7 first-hand reports)
  • Works well overall4 of 7
  • Helped cracked pads2 of 7

Counted from Reddit owner reports. No owner reported using it in salt season. Sources

What owners like

  • Works for most of the owners who tried it
  • One owner said their dog didn't lick it off, and it even helped with traction on floors

Watch out for

  • Didn't moisturize enough for one Lab with hyperkeratosis (thickened, crusty pads)
  • No reports on salt or cold, so it's a healing product, not protection

Where to buy: the only Bag Balm listing we found on Amazon.ca was a 0.25 oz travel tube, not the tin owners describe, so there's no button here.

Dermoscent BioBalm (photo: Amazon.ca)

Dermoscent BioBalm

Verdict: Dermoscent BioBalm has a good but thin record: 3 of 6 owners said it helped dry, cracked or callused pads. The evidence is light: one of the six reports is about a dry nose only, and one is an old forum post. It's a repair balm, so don't expect salt protection from it, and 2 of 6 owners said their dog licked it off.

Good for
Dry, cracked or callused pads; dry noses
Not for
Salt protection on walks (no owner reported it); dogs that lick at anything on their feet
What owners reported (6 first-hand reports)
  • Helped dry, cracked or callused pads3 of 6
  • Dog licked it off2 of 6

Counted from Reddit, a dog forum and one independent review. The independent review was a three-day test on one paw; we counted only its owner's report on their own dog. Sources

What owners like

  • Helped dry, cracked or callused pads for half the owners
  • Also used on dry noses

Watch out for

  • Some dogs lick it off
  • A strong herbal scent, according to the independent review
  • Few reports in total, so treat the verdict as provisional

The Amazon.ca listing describes BioBalm as an organic moisturizer for paw pads, nose and elbows, sold in a jar.

Few reports

Säker Dog Paw Balm

Verdict: Säker Dog Paw Balm is made in Canada, according to the maker, and 2 of its 3 owner reports come from Canadians (Toronto and Saskatoon). With so few reports, treat this as a lead, not a verdict. One owner had some luck with it on salt; another uses it only in milder cold and puts boots on when it gets colder.

Good for
Owners who want to buy Canadian and try a balm for milder winter days
Not for
Anyone who wants a proven pick, or protection in deep cold
  • First-hand reports (2 from Canada): 3 reports

Few reports: Reddit owners in Toronto and Saskatoon, and one who didn't say where. Sources

What owners like

  • One owner finds the tube easy to use
  • Some luck with salt, for one owner

Watch out for

  • One owner switches to boots once it gets properly cold
  • Too few reports to judge how well it lasts on a walk

Säker says the balm is handmade in Canada.

Skout's Honor and Pet Head paw butter: 2 first-hand reports each, not enough to recommend. For Skout's Honor, one owner said their dog's nose healed and one review said it moisturized paws. For Pet Head, one owner said it softened their dogs' paws, but both dogs licked it off and it made floors slippery; another said it works well.

kin+kind and PawSono: both sold on Amazon.ca, but we found no first-hand owner reports outside Amazon reviews, which we don't count.

Vaseline: 3 first-hand reports, all positive (one was a fragrance-free lotion rather than petroleum jelly). Coconut oil: 3 first-hand reports, mixed: one owner puts socks on so the dog doesn't lick it off, one owner said it didn't moisturize enough, and one said it helped a dry nose. Homemade balm: 2 first-hand reports; one dog licked it off, and one owner said it softened the pads. None of these are picks.

Does paw balm protect against road salt, or do I need boots?

Balm can help on lighter salt, but it isn't a substitute for boots on heavily salted streets. Across all 62 first-hand reports on branded balms, 4 of 62 said a balm protected their dog's paws on salt, and 3 of those 4 were about Musher's Secret paw wax. Another 3 of 62 said it worked only partly: on lighter salt, on bigger dogs, or for part of the walk. No owner said a balm kept their dog warm, and 2 of 62 said plainly that it didn't.

One owner who waxed their dog's paws before a walk on a salted road described the limit: “it seemed to protect her for a good part the walk, but towards the second half (last 10 mins?), she started limping and lifting her paw to lick it”.

The healing balms (Paw Soother, Bag Balm, BioBalm) have no salt record in our sample at all. If your dog limps or lifts a paw on salted sidewalks, or you walk in deep cold, boots keep salt off in a way wax can't: see the best dog boots for Canadian winters.

What does paw balm actually do?

Mostly, it heals. Across the branded balms, 13 of 62 reports said a balm helped dry or cracked pads, and another 3 of 62 had mixed results. That's the most common thing owners report, far ahead of salt protection. Overall, 17 of 62 reports simply said the balm works.

The weak spot is staying on. 3 of 62 reports said the balm wore off or didn't last a walk, and no owner said in plain words that it stayed on. Licking cuts both ways: 4 of 62 said the dog licked the balm off, while 5 of 62 said the dog left it alone or that it put the dog off licking. And 5 of 62 said the dog disliked the balm or its smell.

What is the difference between paw wax and paw balm?

A paw wax, like Musher's Secret, is meant to go on before a walk and sit on the pad as a barrier against snow and light salt. A softer healing balm, like Natural Dog Company Paw Soother, Bag Balm or Dermoscent BioBalm, is for repairing dry or cracked pads, usually at home. That's how owners use them in our sample: the salt reports are about the wax, and the healing reports are spread across all of them.

FAQ

What is the best paw balm for dogs in winter?

Musher's Secret paw wax has the most owner reports and the only real salt record: 3 of 33 said it protected paws on salted sidewalks, and 3 more that it worked only partly. For dry or cracked pads, Natural Dog Company Paw Soother does best: 4 of 9 owners said it helped. On heavy salt or in deep cold, use dog boots instead.

Is paw balm safe if my dog licks it?

We can't vouch for any balm being safe to eat; check the ingredient list on the tin and ask your vet if your dog has eaten a lot. What owners report is whether dogs lick it off: 4 of 62 reports said the dog did, and 5 of 62 said the dog left it alone or was put off licking. Natural Dog Company Paw Soother had the best record here.

Can I use Vaseline, coconut oil or Bag Balm on my dog's paws?

Owners do. Bag Balm is a full pick here: 4 of 7 owners said it works, used for healing cracked pads rather than salt. Vaseline had 3 first-hand reports, all positive; coconut oil had 3, mixed (one owner uses socks so the dog doesn't lick it off). None of them has a salt record in our sample.

Why won't my dog's paw balm stay on?

Because it wears off on the walk or gets licked off: 3 of 62 reports said it didn't last, and no owner said in plain words that it stayed on. If it won't stay on long enough for your walks, boots are the better tool.

Does paw balm make floors slippery?

Sometimes. A couple of owners said a balm made their floors slippery, and one Musher's Secret owner noticed a little slipping on hard floors.

When should cracked paws go to the vet instead of getting balm?

We're not vets, and this isn't owner data. As a general rule, deep or bleeding cracks, swelling, a limp that doesn't go away, or a dog that keeps licking one paw are worth a call to your vet before you try another balm.
