Dog paw care after winter walks

Short answer: After every winter walk, get the salt off your dog's paws as soon as you're inside: rinse them with lukewarm water or wipe them with a damp cloth, then dry them well, including between the toes, and check the pads for cracks or redness. The Ontario SPCA, the ASPCA, Cornell's vet school and an Ontario vet clinic all say to clean paws after winter walks, and three of them also say to dry them. One owner found that a dry rag alone doesn't get salt off, and another said wiping their dog's paws after every walk on salt seemed to help with licking. If the pads are dry, add a paw balm; on heavily salted streets, dog boots keep salt off in the first place.

The after-walk routine at a glance

  1. Before you go: boots if your dog will wear them, or a paw wax on lighter salt.
  2. At the door: rinse or wipe each paw with lukewarm water or a damp cloth.
  3. Dry: towel each paw, including between the toes and pads.
  4. Check: look at the pads and between the toes for cracks, cuts or redness.
  5. Moisturize if needed: a thin layer of paw balm on dry pads, once they're clean and dry.
  6. Every few weeks: trim the fur between the pads on long-haired dogs, so snow and salt have less to cling to.

Keep the kit by the door: a dog-only towel, a bowl or paw washer cup of lukewarm water or a damp cloth, and a tin of balm.

How we put this together

We didn't run a test. We read Reddit threads and a few independent product tests where owners describe what they did after winter or muddy walks with their own dog, and counted 81 first-hand outcome reports. We counted what owners said happened, not what they recommended or had heard. Read how we review for the full method.

Why road salt is hard on paws in Canada

Environment and Climate Change Canada says: “On average, 5 million tonnes of road salts are used each year as de-icers on roadways in Canada.” The City of Toronto says: “Salt is damaging to shoes, infrastructure, and the paws of our pets.”

Cornell's vet school explains the problem: “Paws can get cracks or cuts from ice and salt on the roads.” Salt left on the feet also gets licked: the ASPCA warns about ice-melt chemicals being “licked off of bare paws”, and the Main Street Markham Animal Clinic says licking sore paws “can lead to ingestion of salt or other chemicals”. That's why every vet and animal-welfare source we checked says to clean paws when you get home, not just when they look dirty.

Across all 81 reports, 8 of 81 said a method eased salt irritation (less limping, licking or paw-lifting, or paws protected on salt), and 4 of 81 said salt still hurt their dog. One owner whose dogs refuse boots wrote: “They absolutely hate wearing boots, but there is so much salt in the winter that we can’t make it through walks because they are hopping around lifting their paws.”

Before the walk: boots or balm

The easiest salt to clean off is salt that never touches the pad.

Boots work when the dog keeps them on. We counted 19 reports from owners who tried boots: 2 of 19 said their dog tolerated them, and 2 of 19 said boots solved their salt problem. But 12 of 19 said their dog disliked or refused them, and another 3 of 19 gave a mixed answer (only one type, only some of their dogs, or worn despite not loving them). The type owners named most often as staying on was the balloon-style rubber boot; one owner said Wagwear booties stay on too. Another 3 of 19 described salt hurting their dog's paws because boots weren't working for them. Pawz, a balloon-style boot several of these owners named, is the best-for-salt pick in our boots guide.

Musher's Secret paw wax (photo: Amazon.ca)

Musher's Secret paw wax

Paw wax or balm before the walk is the fallback for dogs that won't wear boots. Of 14 owners who used it, 5 of 14 said salt hurt their dog less, 3 of them with Musher's Secret paw wax, and 2 of 14 said it worked only partly (on lighter salt, or on big dogs but not small ones). It isn't a fix for everything: 2 of 14 said it didn't stop ice balls between the toes, and 2 of 14 said it didn't keep paws warm. On heavy salt or in deep cold, one owner switches to boots. One owner put it this way: “Mushers is great but I notice with too much salt on the ground or if it’s below 20 degrees”, and then: “the only thing that works is the godforsaken booties (I hate them too so I feel you)”. Musher's Secret, the wax most of these owners named, is the top pick in our paw balm guide.

At the door: rinse or wipe the salt off

Do it straight away, before your dog licks its feet. The vet and animal-welfare sources agree:

Owner reports on wiping are few: 3 reports of a wipe-down with a cloth or by hand. One owner in the US Northeast, where salt and rock salt cover the sidewalks, said wiping after every walk seemed to help with their dog's licking. Another, whose dog limped on cold snow, wrote that “when we got home and I wiped her paw, she was fine afterward and even wrestling my other dog.”

Rinse or wipe? We found no owner reports comparing the two on salt, so we can't tell you one beats the other from owner data. Rinsing with a bowl, shower, hose or bottle had 6 reports, and 4 of 6 said it cleaned well, but those owners talked about dirt and snowballs more than salt. If the paws are salty, use water either way: the clinic says rinse with lukewarm water, Cornell says wipe or wash. Then dry.

A paw washer cup is a tub lined with soft bristles: add water, dunk a paw, twist, towel off. It's the most-reported tool in our sample, with 25 reports, but most are about mud; only a couple mention salty paws, in passing, so we don't promise it removes salt.

12 of 25 said it cleaned well, and 2 of 25 were mixed; 4 of 25 said it didn't clean well. The catch is effort: 5 of 25 found it a hassle (messy, refilling, the wrong size) against 2 of 25 who found it easy. And 2 of 25 said their dog refused it or hated it. Big or very furry feet are where it fails most. One owner of a poodle and a water dog wrote: “Their foot fluffs held so much mud the cup just made the mess worse instead of better.”

Wirecutter, which tested paw cleaners, agrees: “Our conclusion: These inventive devices work just fine (and we prefer the MudBuster, due to its smaller size). However, we still recommend that you simply use a wet rag.”

The Dexas MudBuster is the cup owners and Wirecutter name; check the size against your dog's paw.

Few reports

Earth Rated dog wipes

Dogs put up with wipes: 3 of 3 owners said their dog tolerated them. But none said wipes got salt off, and the reports weren't about winter, so for salty paws rinse or use a damp cloth. No owner here named a brand. If you keep a pack by the door, Earth Rated's wipes are a general-purpose pack for paws and body, not a paw-only product.

No-rinse foam cleaners came up in one report (quick and easy), too few to judge.

Dry the paws, including between the toes

The Ontario SPCA, the ASPCA and the Main Street Markham clinic all say to dry the paws after washing, and the Ontario SPCA and the clinic both name the area between the toes.

We counted 3 towel-dry reports; one owner said a clean towel works best for them and another that their dog tolerates it. But one owner on salty sidewalks found: “Wiping with a dry rag doesn't get the salt off so we'll have to go with a two stage wet/dry system.” Wet first, then dry.

Check the pads for cracks and redness

While the paw is in your hand, look. The Ontario SPCA says: “Use this opportunity to inspect their paws for any cracks or redness.” The ASPCA adds: “Don't forget to check for cracks in paw pads or redness between the toes.”

Moisturize dry pads with a balm

Once paws are clean and dry, a thin layer of balm helps dry or rough pads. The Ontario SPCA and Cornell both mention balm or petroleum jelly for dry, cracked pads, and the Ontario SPCA says to avoid human moisturizers. Put it on after cleaning, not over salt. Owner picks are in the best dog paw balm for winter.

Trim the fur between the pads

The Ontario SPCA says: “If your dog has long hair, trim the hair between the paw pads and around the paws.” Half the owners who tried it agree. We counted 6 reports of trimming: 3 of 6 said it stopped the ice balls, while 2 of 6 said snow still packed in. A Great Pyrenees owner wrote: “My groomer removes the hair in between the pads. It stopped the ice balls.” It worked for half the owners who tried it, and in powdery snow it isn't a cure.

FAQ

Should I wash my dog's paws after every winter walk?

Yes, when there's salt or de-icer on the ground: the ASPCA, the Ontario SPCA, Cornell and the Main Street Markham clinic all say to clean paws after walks. That means the paws, not a full bath; the Ontario SPCA and the ASPCA warn against bathing too often in winter.

What is the best way to clean salt off dog paws?

Rinse with lukewarm water, as the Main Street Markham clinic advises, or wipe with a damp cloth, then dry well, including between the toes. One owner found a dry rag on its own doesn't get the salt off.

Are dog paw wipes enough, or do I need to rinse?

For salt, rinse or use a damp cloth. Dogs tolerate wipes (3 of 3 owners said so), but no owner said wipes removed salt.

Do paw plungers and paw washer cups actually work?

For mud, often: 12 of 25 owners said a cup cleaned well, but 5 of 25 found it a hassle, and we can't say how well they remove salt.

Is it OK to put Vaseline or balm on dog paws in winter?

The Ontario SPCA and Cornell both mention balm or petroleum jelly for dry, cracked pads, and the Ontario SPCA says to avoid human moisturizers. Put it on clean, dry paws. Before a walk, a paw wax helped 5 of 14 owners on salt, but not on heavy salt. See our paw balm guide.

How do I stop ice balls forming between my dog's toes?

Trim the fur between the pads: 3 of 6 owners said it stopped them. Paw wax didn't stop ice balls for 2 of 14 owners. Boots keep snow off if your dog will wear them.

Can road salt hurt my dog if he licks his paws?

That's one reason to clean paws as soon as you're home. If you think your dog has eaten a significant amount of road salt or ice melt, or the paws are bleeding, swollen or have open sores, contact your vet, as the Main Street Markham Animal Clinic advises.
