How we review products
We didn't test most products ourselves, and we say so. Each guide is built from what real owners report, collected and counted, with a link to every source. Where we have used a product, that section says "we tested this".
Where the reports come from
- Reddit: first-hand posts and comments from owners in dog and Canadian city communities. We count only people describing their own dog's experience. "I heard…" and "I read…" don't count.
- Brand and retailer reviews: counted separately and labelled, because brands can filter what they publish. For example, one brand's own site showed far fewer 1–2 star reviews than independent sources for the same boot.
- Independent hands-on tests by publications and gear reviewers, cited by name.
- Vet and safety sources for health questions (salt burns, ice melt toxicity, cold limits).
What we count
For each product, the topics owners care about: does it stay on, does it keep salt and slush off, is it easy to put on, sizing, durability, rubbing (for example at the dewclaw), and whether dogs tolerate it. We report numbers like "12 owners mentioned salt protection; none were negative", with the sample size.
What this can't tell you
- Reddit reports are found by searching, so they aren't a random sample. Small numbers (under about 10 reports) are shown as "few reports".
- Owners often don't say which size or model they had.
- Your dog's paw shape, gait and tolerance matter more than any average.
What we don't do
- No made-up tests, no AI-generated "hands-on" claims, no copied star ratings.
- No payment or free products from brands. If that changes, it's disclosed next to the product.
Updates
