It goes on over the head, so there are no sleeves to fight with. For the hardest cold, the Hurtta Expedition Parka is the coat owners most often call warm: 6 of 8 say so, and none say it wasn't.

How we chose
We didn't test these coats ourselves. We read what dog owners wrote about their own dogs in winter: Reddit threads, owner blogs and gear-review sites, and two dog forums. We counted 55 first-hand reports, and only counted someone describing their own dog in the cold: was the coat warm, did it last, did it fit, did it stay put, did it cover the belly, did the dog accept it? Advice, "I heard", and product descriptions with no outcome didn't count, and several comments from the same person count once. Read how we review for the full method.
A coat is a full pick if at least five different owners described it. Coats with three or four reports are marked Few reports and are never the top pick; coats with fewer are in Also mentioned at the end. Raincoats are left out: keeping a dog dry in October rain is a different job from keeping it warm in January.

Chilly Dogs Great White North
Verdict: The Chilly Dogs Great White North has the most owner reports in our set and the most consistent ones: owners say it's warm, well made, easy to put on and fits well, and nobody said it wore out. The two weak spots are rain (the fleece neck isn't waterproof) and harness use (the high neck gets in the way of a collar and leash).

The design goes over the head and fastens behind the back, which is why several owners of wiggly or leg-shy dogs single it out.

Hurtta Expedition Parka
Verdict: The Hurtta Expedition Parka is the coat owners most often describe as warm: 6 of 8 say it kept their dog warm, and none say it fell short. Half the owners also say it's well built and fits well. Size carefully: one owner blog advises sizing down if you're between sizes.

One forum owner found both sizes they own work across dogs of quite different weights, which suggests the fit is forgiving.
Hurtta Extreme Warmer
Verdict: The Hurtta Extreme Warmer is a snug, high-coverage coat that owners of small and cold-hating dogs like: 3 of 7 say it held up through several winters, and owners who mention warmth or getting it on are all positive. It's a closer fit than the Expedition Parka, so fast dogs and unusual builds can have trouble.

Verdict: The Hurtta Summit Parka is an adjustable, long-bodied coat that owners like for layering: several say it fits with or without a sweater underneath. Owners disagree on the belly: 3 of 6 praise the coverage, 1 of 6 says it doesn't cover the whole belly.

Verdict: The Ruffwear Vert Jacket is a shell-style winter jacket that Reddit owners like but rarely describe in detail: 3 of 6 simply say they like it, and a boxer-mix owner says it fits a broad chest well. It covers the torso more than the legs and belly, so it's a better fit for active days than for standing around in deep cold.

The Everest Explorer had only one report, too few to judge. One owner's puppy panicked when she tried to put on a Canada Pooch snowsuit.
Canada Pooch Torrential Tracker: a raincoat, so we left it out. Owner reports on it are about rain, not cold.
Do I need a parka, or is a light jacket enough?
It depends on the walk, and the owner reports split the coats into two groups. Owners describe the parkas, the Hurtta Expedition Parka, Hurtta Summit Parka and Chilly Dogs Great White North, keeping dogs warm through hard winter cold, including Canadian winters. The lighter jackets are a different tool: owners use the Kurgo Loft Jacket around freezing, and one Ruffwear Quinzee owner says its vest-like cut gives up some warmth.
Check the wind chill, not just the thermometer. Environment Canada says "Wind chill affects how fast the body and objects lose heat, making it feel colder than the actual temperature", and it includes wind chill in its forecasts when it's zero or below and there's wind. Look at that number, not only the temperature, before a long walk.
If your dog is short-haired, small, older, or has a thin or bare belly, the owners in our sample reach for a parka. Those are the dogs they describe buying coats for: an arthritic Cocker mix, a Dalmatian, a dog that shivers on cool days, a dog "with a thin coat and hairless belly." A light jacket makes sense as a second coat for shoulder season, not as the only one.
How should a winter dog coat fit?
Fit comes up in almost every report, good or bad. What owners say works:
- Measure, then follow the brand's chart. One small-dog owner's advice for Hurtta is "just be sure to follow their measurement guide." A Quinzee owner says going by Ruffwear's chart has always given the right size.
- Measure girth and neck, not just length. A coat can match on back length and still pinch a deep chest.
- Between sizes, think before sizing up. One owner blog advises sizing down on the Hurtta Expedition Parka and Extreme Warmer if you're between sizes. On the Powder Hound, one owner found the larger size baggy but the smaller one too small, so check the chart's chest range.
- Leave room for a sweater if you'll layer. Summit Parka owners like that it adjusts to fit with or without one underneath.
- Check the coat while your dog moves. The fit problems owners describe show up in motion: a back that lifts when the dog bends down, a coat that slides off a fast dog.
- Unusual builds need extra care. A Staffy owner had a Hurtta suit altered by a tailor; a boxer-mix owner found the Ruffwear Vert suited a broad chest.
If you walk on a harness, check how the coat and harness go together before your first cold morning. Only one report in our set talks about it, and it's a warning: the Chilly Dogs Great White North's high neck gets in the way of a collar and leash, so that owner wanted a harness port.

Does my dog need a winter coat?
Not every dog does. The owners in our reports buy coats for dogs that feel the cold: short or thin coats, small dogs, older or arthritic dogs, and dogs with bare bellies. We didn't collect vet guidance for this guide; if you're unsure whether your dog needs one, ask your vet.
What if my dog won't wear a coat?
Try a coat that goes over the head instead of one your dog has to step into. Owners of the Chilly Dogs Great White North, the Hurtta Expedition Parka and the Hurtta Summit Parka all mention that no leg-lifting is needed, and one Chilly Dogs owner says their dog "didn't have to be lured with a treat to put it over her head" after the first walk. Are dog coats with a harness hole worth it?
If you walk on a harness, probably. Our reports say little about harness openings: one owner found the Chilly Dogs Great White North's high neck interferes with the collar and leash and wanted a harness port. Check before buying whether the coat has an opening and where it sits.
Is a waterproof coat necessary in winter?
